Incoming Master & PhD Students

Our group recruits several master and PhD students each year. Below are some frequently asked questions and our responses:

Q: What are the basic requirements for joining the group?

A: We expect prospective students to:

  1. Have a strong motivation to pursue advanced studies at Shenzhen University;
  2. Be interested in our research directions and willing to conduct solid research work;
  3. Possess a solid background in computer science and proficiency in English;
  4. Have a clear motivation for graduate studies and a strong sense of self-discipline.

We have no strict requirements regarding applicants' undergraduate institutions, majors, or prior research publications. Those who meet the above criteria are welcome to contact us via email or in-person meeting. Students applying through the exemption/recommendation track are advised to reach out between August and September; those taking the national postgraduate entrance exam are encouraged to contact us after the scores are released. Please attach your CV, undergraduate transcript, and a statement of future plans.

Q: How many students does the group admit each year?

A: We admit 3-5 students each year, with more openings for professional master’s students and fewer for academic master’s and PhD students.

Q: What is the difference between academic master’s and professional master’s students?

A: There are differences in course and degree requirements, but we do not differentiate between them within our group.

Q: Does the group have sufficient funding and computing resources to support research?

A: We have adequate funding and computing resources.

Q: Does the group support internships?

A: We support internships and exchanges after students have completed certain research milestones.

Q: I am very interested in the group’s research directions, but I lack some background knowledge. How should I start learning?

A: We recommend exploring existing online resources on natural language processing and large language models, such as open courses from Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Westlake University, and CMU, as well as books like Large Language Model (Renmin University) and Large Language Models: From Theory to Practice (Fudan University).

Undergraduate Interns

We welcome highly self-motivated undergraduate students to join our group and participate in research activities. We expect that candidates:

  1. Have a genuine interest in our research directions;
  2. Possess good communication and interpersonal skills;
  3. Have a solid background in computer science or a related field;
  4. Have sufficient time outside regular coursework to conduct research.

Undergraduate Thesis Supervision

We supervise 3-5 undergraduate students for their final-year thesis projects each year. Students are encouraged to reach out in advance to discuss potential topics and research directions.
